Your data, clearly explained

Privacy Policy — How to Win Friends

Effective date: 15 July 2026

This privacy policy describes how the How to Win Friends iOS app ("the app") handles your data. The app is developed and published by Jipiter ("we", "us"), based in the Netherlands. For anything related to your privacy, contact us at info@jipiter.nl.

The short version

  • The app works entirely on your device: no account, no sign-up, and no server of ours. Your settings and notification schedule never leave your phone.
  • We use Google Firebase to collect pseudonymous usage statistics and crash reports so we can improve the app. You can switch this off at any time in Settings → Crash Reporting & Analytics.
  • We show no ads, we do not track you across other apps or websites, and we never collect your name, email address, contacts, or location.

What stays on your device

The app sends you local notifications with Dale Carnegie principles. All of the data it needs for that is stored only on your device:

  • your notification preferences (time window, interval, frequency, selection order, and which principles you enabled);
  • your chosen app language;
  • small housekeeping values such as how often the app has been opened.

None of this is uploaded anywhere. Deleting the app deletes all of it.

Analytics and crash reporting (Firebase)

The app uses two services provided by Google LLC:

  • Google Analytics for Firebase — usage statistics
  • Firebase Crashlytics — crash reports

These help us understand which features are used and fix crashes. The data is pseudonymous: it is keyed to a random identifier created for your installation of the app (the Firebase "app instance ID"), not to your name or any account. We cannot identify you from it.

What is collected when analytics is enabled:

  • General usage events, such as: the app was opened, a notification was tapped (including which principle number it contained), a settings change was made, a screen was viewed, the notification permission was granted or declined, and a rating prompt was requested.
  • Your notification configuration in aggregate form: frequency, order, interval, time window, how many principles are enabled, notification permission status, and the app language.
  • Technical information supplied by Firebase, such as device model, operating system version, app version, and coarse country derived from IP address (the IP address itself is not stored by Google Analytics for Firebase).
  • When the app crashes: a crash report with stack traces and device state at the time of the crash.

What is never collected: your name, email address, contacts, photos, precise location, advertising identifier (IDFA), or the content of anything you type. The app contains no advertising SDKs, and ad personalization signals are explicitly disabled in our Firebase configuration.

Your choice: switching analytics off

Analytics and crash reporting are enabled by default and can be turned off at any time in the app under Settings → Crash Reporting & Analytics. The switch takes effect immediately and disables both usage statistics and crash reporting. The rest of the app works exactly the same with analytics off.

Legal basis (GDPR)

We process this pseudonymous data on the basis of our legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR) in understanding how the app is used and in keeping it stable — balanced by the minimal, pseudonymous nature of the data, the absence of any advertising use, and the in-app opt-out described above.

Who receives the data

Analytics and crash data is processed on our behalf by Google LLC (Firebase), which may process it on servers outside the European Economic Area, including in the United States. These transfers are covered by the EU–U.S. Data Privacy Framework and/or the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses. We do not sell data, and we share it with no one else.

You can read more in Google's privacy policy and Firebase's privacy and security documentation.

Retention

  • Analytics: user-level data tied to the app instance ID is retained by Firebase for at most 14 months, after which it is deleted automatically. Aggregated statistics may be kept longer.
  • Crash reports: retained by Firebase for 90 days.
  • On-device data: kept until you delete the app.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to access, correct, delete, and object to the processing of your personal data, and the right to data portability. Because analytics data is keyed only to a random installation identifier, the simplest way to exercise most of these rights yourself is:

  • Object / stop collection: turn off the toggle in Settings → Crash Reporting & Analytics.
  • Delete: deleting the app removes all on-device data, and the associated Firebase retention periods above apply to anything already collected.

For anything else — including a request to delete data tied to your app instance — email us at info@jipiter.nl and we will help. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your data protection authority; in the Netherlands this is the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.

Children

The app is not directed at children and collects the same minimal, pseudonymous data from all users. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy — for example because the app starts using a new service — we will update this page and the effective date above. Significant changes will be mentioned in the app's release notes.
